The RIASEC is one of the most influential components of our competency-based K-12 career development model. It helps every student develop a career identity and vision of their future-possible selves.

What’s the RIASEC?

Cajon Valley students break down RIASEC and the importance of knowing your interests.

Helping Students Match Interests to Possible Careers

  • Realistic (doers) are those who like to work with “things”. They tend to adopt a concrete approach to problem solving and can often be assertive, competitive and interested in activities that require motor coordination, skill and strength.
  • Investigative (thinkers) are those who like to solve complex problems. The investigative type tends to be very analytical and prefers to work with data and logic.
  • Artistic (creators) are those who think outside the box they do not tend to just accept and follow rules. Artistic types tend to have the natural ability to see things from different perspectives and to come up with new, creative and innovative, ideas.
  • Social (helpers) are the type that like people the most. They tend to be welcoming, sociable and very much like to serve and help others, as they find great joy in it.
  • Enterprising (persuaders) are the types of people who have the natural ability to lead others. Often, these types are very persuasive and with this comes the natural ability to sell things.
  • Conventional (organizers) tend to like structure, rules and order. They are often very organized and methodical, and like to get things done on time to a very high standard.

How can we help you integrate the RIASEC Framework?

Develop a custom, system-wide approach to integration

We integrate the RIASEC framework into your existing mission, vision, or school brand. Our goal is to seamlessly integrate the language without disrupting your existing scope and sequence. If you are interested in using RIASEC and the idea of career-related learning to brand your school, RIASEC offers a strong foundation.  Our goal is to help you integrate the RIASEC and bring a new level of context to your content and stronger relationships between students and teachers.

Build a common career language with your community

The RIASEC has been researched for more than 70 years, but its existence is new to many educators and parents. We provide the communication tools and training to bring the common language, the why, what and how of RIASEC, to life so every adult can articulate the why, what, and how of our model and why it’s good for kids. This approach helps to make powerful connections between what students are learning in the classroom and the world of work.

Professional development for educators and community partners

Our team delivers professional development both synchronously and asynchronously, to small groups or large groups, to support the skill development of educators and counselors. After years of testing, we are now able to offer a simple and focused tools to help every educator in every grade advance the common language of career with their students. Community partners can also learn methods for integrating the RIASEC within their school to career pathways efforts.

Provide tools for teachers and students to integrate the RIASEC language

Years of practice and evaluation across grade levels has allowed us to focus the toolset to improve integration and teacher engagement. We believe career-related learning is most effective when teachers are using their talents to integrate career-related teaching within their core content areas. Therefore, our tools are designed with a dialogic approach to teaching and learning. The tools are research based and 100% aligned to the RIASEC framework with the goal of helping teachers help students speak the RIASEC within the first few months of integration.
